The first day at your new job is almost here, it might seem daunting and you might feel like you have to impress anyone and everyone that you come across but that isn’t the case. Here are a few tips on what you should do on your first day at a new job.
Number 1 – Look your Best, Act your Best
If you don’t know what you should be wearing on your first day go conservative, black trousers, white shirt and black shoes, you can’t go wrong with that. Aswell as that you should come across no different to how you did in the interview, I mean that was the main reason for why you got the job in the first place apart from your experience.
Number 2 – Just Relax
Even though you have to be at your best on your first day don’t burn yourself out, remember to relax then you can maximise your productivity.
Number 3 – Introduce Yourself
Try and speak to anyone and everyone that you see, don’t be shy on your first day of your new job. If you can speak to as many people as you can at least one of them will have something in common with you.
Number 4 – Find out what the Unwritten Rules are
Hopefully you know the written rules before you start your new role, but you need to find out what the unwritten rules are as soon as you can for example, can anyone use the milk? The last thing you want to do is be on someones bad side on day one.
Number 5 – Go to Lunch
If your colleagues or your boss asks, “Do you want to join us for lunch?” unless you genuinely can’t go with them, say yes. You want to give of the impression that you want to mingle with team and be a part of that team.
Number 6 – Find a Friend
This can make the first day and first couple days at your new job a lot easier and can relieve some of the nerves that you might have had before you started. Also if you connect with one of your peers nice and early at least you have someone that can answer most of your questions.
Number 7 – Don’t go on your Phone
Be fully committed to the job on your first day, unless it is urgent don’t use your phone and make sure it is on silent, the last thing you want is your phone going off during a meeting and your mate set your ringtone to “I’m every Woman”.
Number 8 – Smile
Go in with a smile on your face, you might be nervous but your on route to the new job that you worked incredibly hard to get you should be over the moon, so show it on your first day.
Number 9 – Don’t over do it
Of course you want to make a good first impression and show that you have a strong work ethic but that doesn’t mean you have to try and wow your colleagues. You have already landed the job so you must have wowed your boss.
Number 10 – Just Be You
Don’t try and be someone you’re not, at the end of the day it’s difficult to act like someone else so why waste the energy? Also think they hired you for you so there is no point in being anyone but yourself.
I hope that this has helped you and the first day at your new job goes well. Remember you have already done the hard work.
